Glossary Anatomy / Term
The existence and maintenance of a relatively constant environment within the body. In other words, homeostasis is the regulation of all variables in the body of an organism so that they all stay within a certain range. As an example, several regulatory mechanisms go into effect to keep the temperature of the human body very close to 98.6°. Homeostasis is maintained mainly by negative feedback loops, and to a very much lesser extent, positive feedback loops. See also set point.
