The total binding energy of a nucleus is the energy required to separate it into its constituent neutrons and protons. Conversely, when neutrons and protons are combined to form nuclei, energy equal in amount to the binding energy is released in the process. Because the nuclear force is so strong, nuclear binding energies are typically a million times greater than the electromagnetic energies binding electrons to the nucleus in an atom or binding atoms together in molecules.
