Combinations, traps, and threats. Play characterized by short-term attacks, requiring calculation by the players, as distinguished from positional play.
Traps, threats, and plans based on the calculation of combinations or variations. A position where many combinational ideas are present is a tactical position.
The mechanics of combining piece moves and creating threats; involving piece safety, checks, attacks, etc. Advanced tactics are considered “combinations” of tactical motifs, such as pins, forks, removal of the guard and so forth.
