A MIDI sound source with instruments that can be edited. Some daughter boards or modules contain a vast array of sounds (instruments and sound effects) but these cannot be changed. Unless the source is a synthesizer you cannot do things like change the piano sound to have more bass or a longer sustain on the notes. On some synthesizers sounds are so editable that you can create your own or modify sounds in memory.
