Glossary Multimedia / Term
Relationship in a video image between the width of the image and the height of the image expressed in generic terms of units width by height (4:3, 16:9). The aspect ratio for analog NTSC television and that used for most televisions and computer monitors is 4:3 (four by three) in which the display is four units wide for each three units in height. For example a 32 inch television (the measurement of screen size is done diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner forming two triangles on the screen) would be 25.6 inches wide by 19.2 inches tall (a 4-by-3 ratio or width to height). The standard aspect ratio for digital HDTV is 16:9 resulting in screens that are more rectangular.
