Glossary Multimedia / Term
A television or other video display devise with a diagonal screen size of 35 inches or more. A big screen television is basically just a television with a large diagonal screen measurement (the method used for measuring television screens and all forms of screens for projection systems). Essentially, all rear-projection televisions are big screen devices (since the smallest rear projection television commonly produced is 40 to 45 inches in diagonal measurement). Generally, all front projection systems are also considered big screen (front projection systems are those using a separate screen and projector mounted out in the room usually to the ceiling – LCD, DLP, light valve and CRT projectors are the various types currently available). Direct view televisions are, for the most part, not big screen televisions except for 35- and 40-inch sizes. While 27- to 32-inch televisions may certainly have large screens compared to their smaller counterparts, these do not truly qualify as “big screen” displays.
