Glossary Multimedia / Term
The smallest piece of digital data; bits are represented by a one or a zero. Anyone familiar with computers has interactions with bits in common computer terminology. There are eight bits in a byte (a digital word – the bits can be thought of as the digital letters). There are 1,024 bytes in a kilobyte, a common term in computing. Just as computers use many bits to transfer information, so do all digital devices including CD players, DVD players and laserdisc players. These digital media use microscopic dips or pits on a reflective surface to represent bits. The pits and lands (lands being the “ground level” above the pits’ lower floor) are read by lasers and the information is interpreted into the bits of the digital language.
