Control or adjustment found on a video display that adjusts the black level of the image; the black level of a video display image (black level is the level of brightness or light present in the darkest or blackest portion of an image). Increasing brightness adds light to the black level making it less pure black and subsequently making the image lighter (taking out darkness or black in an image makes the image lighter). Decreasing brightness has the opposite effect making colors darker as the level of black is increased (similar to adding black paint to colored paint – the paint becomes darker and the image created with the paint is subsequently darker).
