Glossary Multimedia / Term
Special form of interconnect wire commonly used to connect computers to printers but used in audio to transmit six channels of audio information over a single cable; 25 pin connection and special wire design able to transmit large amounts of line level data at a time. DB-25 connectors are used most commonly to connect surround sound preamplifiers with five- or six-channel amplifiers. This type of cable makes the connection very simple and clean by using a single wire instead of five or six separate interconnects. B-25 cables can only be used between compatible surround sound components. If a user wishes to use multiple amplifiers instead of a single multi-channel amplifier with five or six channels, he needs to use separate interconnects typically of the RCA variety. Typical computer DB-25 cables can be used, but there are audio-specific DB-25 cables that are better suited to transferring audio data in an audio system.
