Glossary Multimedia / Term
Component of a cassette deck (or other audio/video component used to play back and record to magnetic tapes) that is sensitive to the magnetic signals on a tape format enabling it to read those signals and potentially change those signals (record to the tape). Cassettes use long, thin strips of tape coated in magnetic particles to record data. The data may be in the form of audio signals, video signals, or digital data. The head is able to recognize patterns in the magnetic particles on the tape as the tape passes by. The signals may represent digital bits of data or analog waves. These signals are then output to various system components to be reproduced. he head may also possess the ability to record data to a magnetic tape. In such an instance, the head rearranges the magnetic particles on the tape into a new pattern representing a new signal. The new signal can then be read by any other compatible head on a compatible tape player.
