Glossary Multimedia / Term
Personal audio listening device which covers or in some way goes over or attaches to a listener’s ears. Headphones come in many shapes and sizes just like their larger counterparts, traditional speakers. Headphones may sit inside the ear, cover the ear entirely, or sit atop the ear. eadphones are designed to provide audio to a single user. They provide a precise stereo image but may lack some depth being on the sides of a user’s head instead of in front of him. Still, dollar for dollar, headphones often provide the most bang for the buck in terms of sound quality (a $250 pair of high-end headphones may compare to a $1,000 or $2,000 pair of high-end speakers). eadphones can cover the entire audible range, although their bass does not physically move you like that of a subwoofer. Headphones connect through a single wire to a headphone jack. Many audio components have a headphone jack including receivers, preamplifiers, CD players, laserdisc players and DVD players. There are also dedicated headphone amplifiers designed to provide high-quality sound when coupled with good headphones. Headphones take very little power compared to normal speakers due to their unique nature.
