Glossary Multimedia / Term
Wire used to connect various pieces of equipment (components) in an audio/video system carrying audio or video information via low-level electric signals (not very powerful) or via light pulses (digital information carried over fiber-optic interconnects). Interconnects are flexible and come in a variety of lengths. ach interconnect has some form of termination at both ends. The termination or connector is what actually connects to or hooks into the inputs and outputs on a piece of audio/video equipment. Think of an electrical cord with a plug. The plug is the termination or connector which allows it to connect to the electrical outlet just like an interconnect’s termination allows it to connect to an audio/video component. here are a number of interconnect terminations available depending on the use with each cable typically designed for that particular use and termination. The most common terminations or connectors for audio interconnects are RCA (most widely used), XLR, and Toslink (fiber-optic). The common terminations for video interconnects are RCA (composite video), S-video, F-type (used with coaxial cable for cable TV, antennas, etc.),and BNC (used typically with RGB+HV cables connected to projectors). Good quality interconnects can range in price from a few dollars per foot to thousands of dollars. In choosing an interconnect, look for a quality, gold-plated termination and mid- to heavy-shielding. If you are installing coaxial cable (cable TV-type cable), use RG-6 cable.aximum lengths for cables are around 50 feet for audio and video RCA interconnects, 50 feet for S-video cables, and 100-150 feet for RG-6 coaxial cables. Video cables should have an impedance of 75 ohms while audio interconnects should have a 300 ohm impedance.any audio/video components come packaged with cheap interconnects, but investing in some higher quality cables will ensure your system has less distortion through electrical noise and that the full signal is getting through. Additionally, higher quality interconnects tend to outlast their cheaper counterparts and are better built.
