Magnet

A metal which attracts iron and certain iron ores through an invisible “magnetic” force pulling or pushing those ores or electromagnets (devices with the attracting power of magnets but created by running electric current through a wire tightly wound around a piece of metal). n audio terms, magnets are used in most speakers to create the movement of the speaker drivers. Using the attracting forces of magnets, which tend to pull or push other magnets and iron ores, speakers are able to create motion in the drivers. The works by placing a powerful metal magnet in close proximity to the speaker’s voice coil. The voice coil is an electromagnet which creates its own magnetic field (pushing and pulling force) when a current is passed through it. The amplifier supplies the current to the speaker in varying amounts in the form of waves that mirror the shape of sound waves. As the currents from the amplifier excite the voice coil (creating the magnetic effect in the electromagnet), the voice coil is attracted to or repulsed from the stationary metal magnet mounted close to it. This creates movement of the voice coil which, being attached to the speaker cone or other moving drive element, creates movement of the entire speaker driver. The movement then excites the air around the speaker creating waves in the air that we hear as sound. Magnets are an important and integral part of speaker systems.
