A small- to medium-size speaker usually 12 to 24 inches in height designed to be placed on stands or other objects and operated with a subwoofer (See Bookshelf Speaker). A satellite speaker is basically a bookshelf style speaker designed to be used with a separate subwoofer. The subwoofer provides the low bass extension while the satellite speaker furnishes the mid to high frequencies. This combination of smaller speakers and a subwoofer (or multiple subwoofers) results in a high quality system with excellent sound (when the speakers used are of high quality and properly positioned) that is easy to place in a room. mall satellite speakers are easier to place (and often considered more aesthetically pleasing) than their larger floorstanding counterparts. Subwoofers can be easily placed anywhere in the room where the sound is good. Subwoofers producing low frequencies (80 Hz and below) are difficult or impossible to locate by sound alone since low frequency signals are non-directional (they fill the room with no apparent source). This allows subwoofers to be placed out of site if desired and if the sound quality permits. Also, having subwoofers separate from the satellite speakers allows each type of speaker (low frequency producer and mid to high frequency producer) to be placed optimally without regard to the other resulting in the smoothest frequency response when properly set up.
