Glossary Multimedia / Term
Electronic component composed of transistors and integrated circuits using no vacuum tubes. Solid state electronics are the primary form of electronic components found not only in audio/video but in all electronics. olid state components are reliable, low in distortion, cool running (compared to vacuum tubes), efficient and easy to produce (again, compared to vacuum tubes). Most amplifiers, preamplifiers, CD players, etc. are solid state device. he largest area where tubes are still used is in amplifiers and televisions. Cathode ray tubes used in many video displays are special forms of vacuum tubes, although most, if not all, modern televisions also contain solid state electronics. Tube amplifiers are primarily an expensive, fringe item. They produce a warm, mellow sound that some audiophiles feel cannot be achieved by solid state electronics. However, solid state devices are generally superior to vacuum tubes in practically every other way (and there are many people, a majority actually, who prefer solid state amplification to tube amplification for solid state’s low distortion and other benefits).
