Protection against lightning strikes and other similar sudden increases in power, which may damage electrical equipment. Surge protectors essentially provide a guard against too much voltage coming through the power line into an electrical component. If too much energy does get through, it may destroy delicate electronics not designed to handle so much power. Surge protectors stop power surges from making it through to the devices plugged into them. Surge protection is also one of the functions of line conditioners.
