Glossary Music / Term
A breathing break; termination of a musical phrase.
The close of a musical phrase or movement. There are perfect, imperfect, plagal and interrupted cadences. The tonic chord preceded by the dominant constitutes a perfect cadence, but not invariably, only at the end of a phrase. In the middle of a phrase, V-I is a strong chord progression (especially from a weak to a strong beat) and not a cadence.
Two chords at the end of a piece which provide a type of 'punctuation' at the end of a musical phrase. Cadences can either suggest the sentence isn't over, or provide a type of musical 'full-stop'.
A sequence of chords that brings an end to a phrase, either in the middle or the end of a composition.
