Chorale

A hymn tune.

A hymn sung by the choir and congregation often in unison.

A Lutheran hymn. Generally the music moves in block chords. The most famous Chorales of all were written by Bach.

[not choral]: Hymns of the Lutheran church originated in the Renaissance. As most Catholic church music in the 16th century was an outgrowth of plainsong, so much Lutheran church music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was an outgrowth of the chorale. Most Bach cantatas use a chorale tune.

Originally refers to a German Protestant hymn tune. In composition, it typically means a choral composition for voices or instruments, such as a Bach chorale. The word “Chorale” is also sometimes used as the name of a choir or chorus.
