Inversion (chords)

(Inversion, Inversion chords) A chord without the root in the bass. A first inversion chord is used to start a new thought as in recitatives. The second inversion chord (six-four chord) is a very unstable one with a limited use. Typically it precedes the cadenza. A great exception in its use is the first Razumovsky Quartet which starts with a six-four chord.
