Glossary Music / Term
The method, frequent in early cantatas, of using the same bass line for all the stanzas of a song, with varying melodies in the upper part. Basso ostinato and strophic bass are examples of continuous and sectional variation, respectively. Strophic variation holds a place of its own halfway between the theme and variations and the ostinato bass.
