Glossary Narrative Terms in Fiction and Film / Term
The satisfactory winding up of a narrative, giving the reader the sense that everything demanded by the plot has in fact occurred and that narrative movement has come to rest: conflicts are resolved, and the narrative returns to a state of equilibrium, rather than unrest. Traditional fictions signal closure with landmark events — a wedding, a death — but many modern fictions end on an uneventful note, as if to say "That's the way things are."
