Equipment Interchange Receipt

(EIR) Equipment Interchange Receipt means that the container arrives at or leaves a depot, transferring the onus of responsibility to the next carrier.

The Equipment Interchange Receipt, also known as the Container Interchange Receipt (CIR) is a form that is generated every time a container goes from one interchange point to another. The interchange points could be two container ships, terminals, container yards or at any intermodal interchange point. The document is issued by the carrier to the shipper to pick up or deliver the containers.

The Equipment Interchange Receipt lists the container number, the code of the vessel/voyage, stacking position and stowage position. This document is given to the haulier when the containers are delivered or collected (loaded or empty) from the container terminal. The information in the EIR is updated at every interchange point. Sometimes, it also includes information on any damages to the container that helps to identify the responsible parties.
