As wind flows around a WT tower, regions of lower wind velocity are created just upstream and downstream of the tower, particular in the case of tubular towers. As the blades pass through the tower shadow, they experience a periodic dip in loading which causes fatigue damage to blades and can excite harmonics (resonance) in the blade.
