Glossary Multimedia / Term
A component of a speaker driver which holds the various portions of the driver together. The speaker diaphragm (the moving cone, dome or other structure) is connected to the top and widest diameter section of the basket with a speaker “surround” made of a flexible material. The surround, or suspension, holds the speaker diaphragm in its position while allowing it to move in and out. The basket is round in shape corresponding to the speaker diaphragm and made of metal to withstand the stresses of the speaker driver. he bottom of the basket holds the speaker magnet. A speaker’s magnet is typically circular surrounding the voice coil (a tightly wrapped coil of fine wire in a circular shape attached to the bottom of the diaphragm). As a current is applied to the voice coil, it generates an electromagnetic field that interacts with the magnetic field of the magnet itself. This interaction causes the voice coil to move, and since it is attached to the diaphragm, the diaphragm itself moves. This motion creates the sound we hear. he basket holds the magnet in place while also holding the speaker diaphragm in relation to the magnet. While the diaphragm is attached to the basket with a surround at the far end from the magnet (at the widest diameter or front of the speaker), it is also connected nearer to the magnet with the spider. The spider is a flexible yet somewhat rigid structure that holds the voice coil and bottom end of the speaker diaphragm close to but not touching the magnet. he basket thus gives form to the entire speaker driver enabling it to move and create sound when a signal is applied to the voice coil.
