Glossary Music / Term
Symbol that lowers a pitch by one half step (b).
When a flat symbol ♭ is added to a note it lowers the note by a half-step. For example, if we have the note D and we add a flat to it the note now becomes D-flat or D♭.
Indicated by a stylised ♭ sign, shows that the note before which it is place should be lowered by a semitone. Flat can also mean that a note is out of tune, sounding lower than it should in this case.
A symbol indicating that the note is to be diminished by one semitone.
