Consumer video format developed by Sony during the 1980’s and eventually dropped for VHS. Beta used a half-inch magnetic tape to playback video. Betamax is different from Betacam. Betacam is a professional-level videotape system used in professional broadcasts. It too was developed by Sony but has survived to be widely used in professional video recording.
