Glossary Multimedia / Term
Technique in audio where the high frequency drivers in a speaker are driven or powered separately from the low frequency drivers used in the same speaker through the use of dual binding posts on the speakers and multiple amplifiers. Bi-amplifying allows you to run the different frequency reproducing drivers in a speaker from different amplifiers. Using this approach, one can choose amplifiers to complement the high frequency section of the speaker separately from amps that complement the low end. This approach minimizes interactions between the different drive units since they run from different amplifiers. This approach also allows the use of external electronic crossovers in the place of passive crossovers built into the speakers. i-amplification can result in high quality output; however, it costs significantly more than a system without bi-amplification thanks to the expense for an additional amplifier. Speakers must have dual binding posts, one pair for the upper frequencies and one pair for the lower frequencies, with their jumpers removed in order to operate in a bi-amplified mode.
